Zhejiang Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (ZIME) is a full-time higher vocational college to cultivate high quality mechanical and electrical professionals. While adhering to school running concepts of “openness, cooperation and service” and practicing the motto of “being practical and pursuing excellence and novelty”, it has been developed into an importance base of Zhejiang Province to cultivate badly-needed talents of advanced manufacturing industry and rated as one of the 53 colleges “to cultivate badly-needed highly skilled talents” by the Ministry of Education through its construction and development of more than 60 years with hard work and unremitting efforts of its staff for generations. The college was affirmed as “national demonstrative construction unit among higher vocational colleges” by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance in 2007; trial college to cultivate four-year higher vocational talents of Zhejiang Province and one of top 50 colleges among national higher vocational colleges in 2015; and excellent college in the first operation of Huang Yanpei vocational education award of Zhejiang Province and an construction unit of “Zhejiang Province with Special Characteristics in Internationalization” in 2016.
ZIME occupies a total area of 61.2 hectares (including 40 hectares in Chang An Campus), 327,000㎡of which is building area. The institute possesses teaching instruments and equipment combined with 5 functions of teaching, training, professional accreditation, research and professional service and manufacturing in 20 training centers and 220 laboratories that are worth over 212 million RMB （32.3million USD, 20,300 RMD per student）. Among these, and Computer Numerical Control Technology Training Center have been chosen as the national l demonstrative model for other higher vocational schools. There are many of these kinds of technology centers for practice and experiment, such as mechanical and electrical integration center, intelligent manufacturing center, precision manufacturing, digital workshop, robot technology application center, automatic control center, applied electronics center, 3D Printing, rail transit technology center etc.
ZIME has a complete educational system comprised of eight main departments, including the Department of Mechanical Technology, the Department of Electrical and Electronics Technology, the Department of Materials Technology, the Department of Transportation Technology, the Department of Information Technology, the Department of Economics and Trade Management, the Department of Design and Arts, and the Department of International Education. ZIME covers 23 disciplines including 69 directions, among which Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Computer Numerical Control, Mechatronics, Electronic Application, Computer Information Management and Marketing have been chosen as national-level key disciplines. ZIME also has 1 national-level teaching resources database, 11 provincial-level outstanding disciplines and 10 provincial-level key disciplines. ZIME also has 7 national-level selected courses, 7 national-level selected resource sharing courses, 25 provincial-level selected courses and 2 provincial-level selected on-line courses. At present, ZIME has won 2 first-class prizes and 4 second-class prizes of national-level teaching achievement, 10 first-class prizes and 5 second-class prizes of teaching achievement of Zhejiang Province.
There are 10, 423 full-time students in ZIME as well as 425 full-time teachers, including 140 professors and associate professors, more than 250 of who have obtained a doctoral or master degree. ZIME has 2 national-level well-known teachers and 6 provincial-level well-known teachers, 2 national-level outstanding teachers and 4 provincial-level outstanding teachers, 1 national-level key teaching team and 4 provincial-level key teaching team, 4 national-level outstanding technicians and 7 provincial-level outstanding technicians, 3 teachers who are assigned with special subsidy of the State Council and government, 1 provincial-level chief technician, 2 provincial-level young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contribution, 1 provincial-level young and middle-aged academic leader, 21 provincial-level discipline leaders, 1 national-level advanced teaching team and 1 national-level advanced individual of vocational education.
ZIME is active in the exploring and practicing the way to run school by integration of industry, school and research. ZIME has also co-established Zhejiang Province Mechanical Equipment Manufacturing Technical Innovation Platform with Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Mechanical Scientific Research Institute Co., Ltd, Zhejiang Province Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Mechanical and Electrical Technology Application Center with Zhejiang Machinery Industry Federation and Zhejiang Province Sliding Bearing Engineering Technology Research Center with SHENFA Group Co., Ltd. The laboratory researching the advanced technology application has been established to further cooperation between ZIME and famous multi-nation companies on campus like GE, OMRON and SIEMENS. There have been 235 training bases outside the campus related to the enterprises of Zhejiang KAIDA, Zhejiang SUPCON, WAHAHA and others. At the same time, about 160 experts from the cooperative companies have been invited to serve as members of three committees to give advice about how to run a school well and increase specialized knowledge. ZIME also undertakes a series of projects to serve the local economy. Namely, “Automobile Crankshaft Follow Grinding Lathe and Related Technology assigned by National 863 Project,” “Multi-cavity Injection Mold Hot Runner Technology and Application Research” cooperated with WAHAHA Group Co., Ltd, which won “the second-class Scientific and Technological Award of Zhejiang Province in 2007.” ZIME also won a lot of honors, like “Zhejiang Outstanding School of Higher Education Scientific Research Management in 2010,” “Hangzhou Top 10 Colleges and Institutes of Scientific and Technological Innovation in 2010,” “2011 Outstanding Unit of National-level Higher Vocational Institutes in Scientific Research,” “2010-2014 Top10 National Demonstrative and Key Higher Vocational Colleges in the Competiveness of Scientific Research.”
The essential function of ZIME is to produce students who have solid professional knowledge, outstanding technical ability, and excellent quality. By following the teaching principle of “being competence-oriented, practice-focused, learning and training-based, and comprehension-emphasized,” ZIME has been actively exploring a new method of higher vocational education. The result is a systematic mode of higher vocational education with Chinese characteristics. Students take examinations to get certificates on different technical levels and professional qualifications, 100% of whom have acquired it. ZIME urges the students to participate in various kinds of national-level or provincial-level skill contest and competition so as to improve their practical skill. In recent year, the students won more than 450 awards and honors in national-level and provincial-level skill contests and competitions. ZIME boasts an employment rate of over 98%, while the employment rate of key discipline students is 100%. Therefore, the college has been awarded numerous titles, such as “National Award for Professionals Cultivation,” “2011-12 National Demonstrative School of Employment of College Graduates,” “the Advanced School of Zhejiang Vocational Education,” “Zhejiang Advanced School of Employment of College Graduates,” and “the Zhejiang Innovative Award for College Student Management.”
This system of professional accreditation has been established to focus on the testing and training of the different levels, from elementary to high-skilled technician. ZIME provides training bases at the national, regional, and local level. At the national level, it provides Numerical Control Technology education for the urgently needed professionals, China's National Teacher Training Base for Higher Vocational Education, China's National Highly Skilled Professionals and China's National Occupational Skill Testing Organization. At the regional level, the institute provides Zhejiang Province with its Highly Skilled Professionals Training Base. At the local level, the school provides the municipality of Hangzhou with its Highly Skilled Professionals Training Base. In total, ZIME provides more than 60,000 workers with vocational skill training and vocational qualification certification training programs in the field of fitter, electrical maintenance, numerical control, milling and lathing, 49,000 of whom have accredited as professional by the panels of ZIME, 20,000 of whom have been trained to be technicians. ZIME also has undertaken about 160 national-level or provincial-level contests for all kinds of technology.
